"With
reports of engine fires mounting,
Ford Motor Co. is warning owners
of 3.8 million pickups and
SUVs to have their cruise-control
switches disconnected as part
of one of the biggest recalls
in automotive history.
The
automaker said Wednesday that
it is recalling a wide range
of 1994-2002 model-year vehicles
-- including its top selling
F-150 pickup -- to fix cruise-control
switches allegedly linked to
more than 1,100 engine fires.
The
defective cruise-control switch
has grown into one of the most
costly and widespread automotive
safety problems since the Firestone
tire recall and comes as Ford
struggles to turn around its
U.S. operations."
Ford
is also recalling nearly
260,000 vehicles, including
F-Series Super Duty Pickups
from the 2004-2005 model
years, and the Ford Excursion
Full Size SUV and E350 and
E450 vans for the 2004-2005
model years. About 180,100
of these vehicles have 6.0
liter diesel engines that
have a potentially faulty
fuel injection control module.
There have been reports of
two minor injuries resulting
from this problem. The National
Highway Traffic Safety Administration
(NHTSA) announced that Ford
was recalling 78,675 Super
Duty Pickups and chassis
cab vehicles from the 2005
model year because their
fuel line may separate from
the main fuel bundle. The
NHTSA said that fuel line
separation can cause engine
stalling or leakage, possibly
resulting in a fire. The
trucks affected by this recall
include the F-250, F-350,
F-450 and F-550 Super Duty
pickups. These Ford trucks
were equipped with 5.4 or
6.8 liter gasoline engines.
