Role of the Nurse Paralegal
Our firm employs three Nurse Paralegals and a Medical Records
Coordinator. These highly, experienced registered nurses enhance our litigation
team in many ways. A majority of today's cases involve complex medical issues
that must be interpreted and analyzed. The blending of the nurse paralegals with
the legal team creates the ideal team to litigate complex medical malpractice
and personal injury cases.
From the time of the initial client interview the medical team is involved with
obtaining records, talking with experts, analyzing the medical issues, creating or
assisting with exhibits for trial, and providing support to the client, throughout
the legal process.
One of the most important tasks of the nurse paralegal is the review of the
medical records. While an attorney or physician is uniquely capable of reading the
records and determining the major points involved, the nurse paralegal, in addition
to her training, can "read between the lines" of the chart and detect many subtle
points that may be overlooked. This is possible for the nurse by virtue of her
having "lived" in the healthcare environment.
The nurse paralegal is also called upon to interpret difficult medical concepts
and explain them in a way that is understood by the attorneys and juries; a skill
developed over many years of being the liaison between the patient, family and
doctors. Our nurses are also an important contact in our firm for our clients.
